Utah Transit Authority Bans Mobile
Gambling

A
new ordinance issued just last month by the Utah Transit
Authority will see fines being handed out to passengers of using
their mobile phones to gamble while accessing the UTA's wireless
internet service.
The UTA added a free wireless internet service to its
Frontrunner commuter trains and all passenger over 18 are free
to access the service subject to its terms and conditions and
attached filter. But the filter is not quite doing its job
and authorities, worried that passengers are gambling on their
trains will now issue fines to those found doing so.
A first offence will cost $300, and subsequent offences $500
each. Fines will be handed out by transit police, so as
well as having their tickets checked, Frontrunner commuters may
now also have their phones scrutinized.
UTA spokesperson Gerry Carpenter, said that passengers can
appeal a citation.
Guess it could be worse. In North Korea people found using
mobile phones are executed! According to the Associated
Press, a South Korean think tank claimed in late 2007 that its
Northern neighbor had increased public executions of people
caught owning a mobile phone.
Imagine if they were caught owning a mobile phone and using it
to gamble!
