Online betting exchange Betfair have managed to have a betting
application added to Apples iPhone App Store, becoming the first
major betting company to do so.
While there are plenty of gambling related applications on the
App Store, until the addition of the Betfair app they have all
been 'play' money games - in line with Apples no-gambling-apps
policy. This policy is in turn largely prompted by the
current UIGEA online gambling regulations in the US.
The Betfair app does not involve casino games, but rather access
to their well known betting exchange product, whereby punters
can take and lay bets on various events.
According to Charles Palmer who is in charge of Betfair's mobile
betting division Apple didn't make them jump through too many
hoops before adding product.
“There were no terms and conditions about gambling. We
approached Apple with the proposal and our app, showing it does
the normal KYC and age verification...We have also added the
ability to locate where the customer is. It can tell if you are
in the UK or Ireland, and if you’re not, it won’t function. We
put that in there as an extra precaution - they didn’t request
that.”
This is a major development for not only Betfair, but the online
gambling industry generally, signally a potential relaxing of
Apples former stringent anti-gambling stance.
